Your Cheapest Lead Could Be Teaching Google an Expensive Lesson

A cheap enquiry can become an expensive distraction when fake submissions are counted as success. Discover how to protect your forms, check conversion signals and measure the leads your business can actually serve.

Your Cheapest Lead Could Be Teaching Google an Expensive Lesson

A form arrives. Your ad account records a conversion. Your team calls the number and hears: “I never asked for a quote.”

The enquiry goes nowhere. Yet a campaign optimizing towards that submission may still receive a signal that its objective was achieved.

That possibility makes Google Ads spam leads more than an inbox nuisance. Unreliable conversion data can influence what automated bidding is working towards.

The Gap Between a Submission and a Customer

Google filters invalid advertising traffic, but its own guidance explains that these protections cannot prevent every invalid lead reaching your website.

Someone can still enter fake details. Automated submissions can still reach a form. A low reported invalid-click count does not establish that your enquiries are genuine.

If you suspect invalid ad traffic, preserve dated lead records and click identifiers. Google accepts investigation requests covering the previous 60 days; a credit depends on its findings.

There is another distinction worth making: an irrelevant enquiry is different from a fabricated one.

A genuine person requesting a service you do not offer needs better qualification. A bot submitting nonsense needs website protection. Each requires evidence before choosing a fix.

Start With the Last 30 Enquiries

Take a manageable sample of recent enquiries and give each a clear status:

  • Spam or fabricated: Evidence of promotional abuse, automation or invented details.

  • Genuine, unsuitable: A real request outside your services or coverage.

  • Qualified: A genuine request your business can reasonably serve.

  • Converted: The person completed your defined commercial outcome.

  • Unresolved: Insufficient information to classify it.

Do not automatically label an unanswered call as fake.

Record the landing page, enquiry time, campaign identifier where available, and the reason for each decision. Check whether the enquiry actually came from advertising; forms can receive spam from other sources.

This gives your Google Ads management a business-level measure of quality.

Protect the Form Before Recording Success

Ask your developer to test when the submission conversion fires.

Does it happen when someone clicks Submit, even if validation fails? Can refreshing the confirmation page trigger it again?

Track an accepted submission separately from an attempted submission, and review duplicate counting.

Then examine the protection around the form. Google recommends measures including server-side validation and verification tools.

For example, Cloudflare says its Turnstile widget requires verification on the server; displaying the widget alone does not protect a form.

Test legitimate submissions after making changes. People using mobile devices or assistive technology must still be able to contact you.

Build these checks into your website design and enquiry forms.

Tell Google What Happened After the Form

Your team's qualification notes do not automatically become bidding feedback.

Google supports qualified-lead and converted-lead goals, allowing businesses to report outcomes beyond the initial enquiry. Enhanced conversions for leads can help connect imported outcomes with earlier ad interactions using appropriate first-party data.

Renaming a form submission “Qualified lead” does not establish that the person qualifies. Your business still needs a consistent checking process.

Have your tracking specialist connect the relevant outcome, verify the imported data and confirm which goal each campaign uses.

Primary and secondary conversion settings matter here. Secondary actions are generally observational, but actions included in custom goals can still influence bidding. Review the campaign's actual configuration.

Choose an outcome with enough timely, reliable data to support optimisation. Google advises against selecting goals from several journey stages for optimisation together. Plan the transition instead of changing every setting at once.

Apply the relevant consent requirements and customer-data policies when connecting customer information.

Measure the Cost of a Useful Conversation

Consider a hypothetical campaign spending US$1,000 on 50 enquiries.

The headline cost per enquiry is US$20.

If only five enquiries meet your qualification criteria, the cost per qualified lead is US$200. Both figures describe the same spending.

Track qualified enquiries, booked work and the time your team spends sorting submissions. Account for the delay between an enquiry and its eventual outcome before comparing periods.

Start with a website audit and ask whether form validation and conversion tracking need a separate review.

Before asking your campaign for more leads, check which enquiries you are teaching it to value.
